Research Associate
The Orient-Institut Beirut (OIB), a research institute of the Max Weber Foundation funded directly by the German government, is seeking to fill the position of a Research Associate based in Cairo, preferably starting on 1 October 2026.
The position is part-time (20 hours per week) and is initially offered for a one-year term, with the possibility of renewal. The selected candidate will be based in Cairo and report directly to the OIB Directorate in Beirut.
Employment will be under an Egyptian employment contract, and remuneration will follow the salary scale of the DAAD Regional Office Cairo. Due to legal requirements, applications are open only to Egyptian nationals or other candidates who already hold a valid work permit for Egypt.
Requirements:
- Master’s degree in a discipline relevant to the OIB’s research profile
- Demonstrated research experience in one or more of the OIB’s academic fields
- Sound knowledge of the Egyptian academic and higher education landscape
- Experience in academic or cultural management in Egypt
- Excellent written and spoken Arabic and English
- Strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently, flexibility, and a willingness to participate in professional development; experience working in international teams
The following attributes are advantageous:
- Ongoing or completed PhD
- Proficiency in written and spoken German
- A vision for expanding the OIB’s activities and academic engagement in Egypt and the wider region
- Experience in preparing and submitting research grant applications
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Represent the OIB in Cairo
- Build, maintain, and expand academic networks in Egypt and the region
- Plan, organize, and coordinate the OIB’s public events, conferences, and academic activities in Egypt
- Conduct independent research and contribute to the OIB’s academic programme
- Develop, implement, and manage projects, including financial administration
- Manage the scientific communication activities of the OIB Cairo Office, including the website and social media channels
