Applied Research: The Case of Riverbank Filtration in Upper Egypt

The University of Applied Sciences (HTW) Dresden, the Suez Canal University, and the Holding Company for Water & Wastewater (HCWW) Cairo, investigate sites for Riverbank Filtration in Egypt to foster the development of cost efficient and safe access to drinking water supplies.

On November 21, 2016, in the framework of the “German Days in Upper Egypt” – a four-day event organised by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Egypt – the German Science Centre (DWZ) Cairo and the GIZ organised a Cairo Climate Talk (CCT) panel in Sohag, to present the benefits of river bank filtration.

Riverbank Filtration has been used in Germany for 140 years to extract drinking water nearby wells, rivers, and lakes. Natural processes like the infiltration of surface water, and filtering, adsorption, and degradation processes in the aquifers, are used to rid the water from pollutants and contamination. This approach lowers the cost of water purification, and additionally offers – after careful selection of the production site – a sustainable and safe process with low maintenance requirements. The Governor of Sohag Dr Ayman Abdel Monem, the German ambassador Julius Georg Luy, and the chairman of the HCWW Sohag General Mohamed Badry, and the 150 attending guests, followed the discussion between German and Egyptian experts with high interest.

Exhibition on the Potential of Riverbank Filtration

In addition, the German Science Centre, within the Context of the German Days in Upper Egypt 2016, provided the space for an exhibition on the Potential of Riverbank Filtration created by the Suez Canal University and the University of Applied Sciences (HTW) Dresden, in cooperation with the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater (HCWW) Cairo.
