Research Ambassadors
In autumn 2014, the DAAD Regional Office Cairo launched the DAAD Research Ambassador Program in Egypt. The program is supported by the DAAD’s International Research Marketing Department (K22) with funding from the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). Its goal is to expand the DAAD’s reach beyond Cairo, build trusted relationships with universities in peripheral regions, and implement joint activities and capacity-building initiatives. At the same time, the program aims to inform students and researchers in Egypt about Germany as a research destination.
The DAAD Research Ambassadors are experienced and highly qualified researchers who have spent at least ten months conducting scientific work in Germany. They act as liaisons between Egyptian universities and the DAAD Regional Office in Cairo. Their main goal is to inform students, researchers, and university leadership not only about the DAAD and its funding opportunities but also about other German research organizations, institutions, and programs. In doing so, they provide guidance and inspire young researchers to explore research opportunities in Germany.
Since 2014, the DAAD Regional Office Cairo has steadily expanded its presence at Egyptian universities outside the Greater Cairo area. Currently, eight Research Ambassadors are active in Egypt. They participate in annual workshops to stay updated on new programs, changes, and opportunities offered by the DAAD, its regional office, and partner organizations.
The main role of a DAAD Research Ambassador is to promote research opportunities in Germany within their respective academic community, university, organization, and field of expertise.
This can be achieved through activities such as:
- Connecting with department heads and administrative leaders to share information about study and research opportunities in Germany, including DAAD scholarships and programs offered by other German organizations.
- Organizing on-campus information sessions for students in their department and/or potential applicants for DAAD programs each academic year.
- Advising and supporting students and researchers interested in academic positions or research stays in Germany—both at their home university or institution in Egypt and, when applicable, for German DAAD scholarship holders currently studying in Egypt.
Please note that this is a voluntary position without remuneration. However, DAAD provides reimbursement upon request to cover expenses related to promotional materials or catering for meetings and information events.
