Study Information Day 2017 On October 5, 2017, the 11th Study Information Day for Graduates of the German Schools took place at the Deutsche Evangelische Oberschule (DEO) in Cairo. The event has a long-standing tradition and annually attracts many German universities and universities for applied sciences. With seven recognised German schools, of which four offer the German graduation certificate Abitur, it is not difficult to explain the growing interest.

A total of 400 students from grades 11 and 12 attended the event which has been organized by the German Academic Exchange Service’s (DAAD) Cairo Office since 2006. The students who are all fluent in German attended the more than 22 presentations offered throughout the day and got insights into the German university system by the DAAD’s employees. Next to introductions into specific fields of study like Environmental Engineering, Medicine and International Business, which were presented by Alumni of the German Schools and the DAAD, the attending universities presented their institutions.

The attending universities displayed the diversity of the German university landscape through both their regional location and thematic focus. The SRH University Heidelberg, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, Ulm University, Technical University of Munich, Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences, Heilbronn University, Philipps-Universität Marburg, Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau, Kiel University, Technische Universität Darmstadt, as well as two Egyptian universities, the German University in Cairo and the Cairo University participated in the Study Information Day 2017.

Furthermore, every university was represented with a booth at which the students received information material as well as individual counseling through the university representatives. Many of the students had already prepared ideas about their wish to study, while others are still in the beginning of the orientation period. For both target groups, the event held many opportunities to explore a potential future at one of the attending institutions. Experiences from the last years show that a majority of graduates from the German Schools opt for study programmes abroad if their financial situation allows for it. Of those graduates, most students decide to study in Germany. The DAAD in partnership with the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development, who was participating in the information event as well, contribute to the number by awarding an average of five scholarships per year to the best graduates both on an academic level and based on their social involvement.

For interested universities who would like to participate in next year’s Study Information Day, please send an expression of interest to schulendaadcairo.org.
